Building supply installations (instalaciones de enlace)

The part of a building electrical installation that links the distributor network to each home or business unit: main fuse box (CGP), general supply line, meter room and individual riser cables (ITC-BT-12).

What building supply installations are

Instalaciones de enlace are the stretch that carries electricity from the street network to the board of each home or business unit in a building. They are covered by ITC-BT-12 to ITC-BT-16 of the Low Voltage Regulations (REBT). Just before them is the service connection (acometida), the cable from the network, which belongs to the distributor.

The parts

  1. Main fuse box (CGP): a box with fuses, on the façade or in the entrance, protecting the building supply line.
  2. General supply line (LGA): the cables from the CGP to the meter room.
  3. Meter room: the room or cabinet with the meters of every home and the communal services meter.
  4. Individual riser cables (derivaciones individuales): the line from each meter to the board of each home or unit.

In detached houses it is simpler: a protection and metering box on the façade and a riser to the board.

Who pays for an upgrade

The CGP, the LGA and the meter room are common elements, so the community pays according to each owner’s share. Each riser serves one home; when all are renewed at once, the owners’ meeting usually agrees how to split the cost.

When they must be upgraded

  • Old buildings with scattered meters, ageing cables or poorly protected boxes.
  • Power increases or new supplies beyond what the supply line or risers can take: the distributor may ask for an upgrade before granting the power.
  • Inspections that find faults in common areas.
  • EV chargers, which need space in the meter room and enough cable size.
