Individual riser cable (derivación individual)

The line that connects your meter, in the building's meter room, to the fuse board of your home or premises. Its cross-section sets the maximum power you can contract without replacing it.

Individual riser cable (derivación individual)

What the riser cable is

It is the last section of the building’s service installations. It leaves your meter in the meter room, rises through the building’s service shaft and reaches your home’s fuse board, where the main switch (IGA) sits. It is governed by ITC-BT-15. Although it runs through communal areas, it serves only your home.

Why it limits your power

Each cable carries a maximum current depending on its cross-section. If the riser cable was sized for low power, as in many old flats, raising your contracted power may mean replacing it with a thicker one. Voltage drop is also counted from the meter, so in tall buildings or with a distant meter room the length matters too. For example, for an EV charger on scheme 2, the 5 % voltage drop limit includes the riser cable.

When it must be upgraded

  • When raising your power beyond what its size allows.
  • When switching from single-phase to three-phase.
  • When the cable is old, damaged or heats up.
  • When adding big loads, such as an EV charger, aerothermal heat pump or induction hob.

Who pays for it

As it serves only your home, the owner pays for the upgrade. If it has to pass through communal areas, it is wise to inform the comunidad (owners’ association). Afterwards a boletín is issued for the distributor for the new power.

If you lose power while your fuse box is fine and your neighbours have power, the fault may be in the riser cable. See increase contracted power in Seville, Spain.
