FAQ
What cable size does an EV charging point need in Spain?
The legal minimum for an EV charging point in Spain is 2.5 mm², but for 7.4 kW installers use, as a guide, 6 mm² up to 15 metres, 10 mm² up to 30, 16 mm² up to 50 and 25 mm² up to 80, so as not to exceed the 5 % voltage drop set by ITC-BT-52.
What cable size an EV charging point needs
The cable size (cross-section) for an EV charger is not chosen by eye: it depends on the charger’s power and, above all, on the distance between the meter or fuse board and the parking space. ITC-BT-52, the Spanish regulation for EV charging, sets a minimum of 2.5 mm² copper and a maximum voltage drop of 5 % from the origin of the installation to the charging point.
Guide table for 7.4 kW (32 A single-phase)
This is the usual installers’ rule, designed for a drop of up to 3 % to leave margin for the rest of the installation:
| Circuit length | Recommended size |
|---|---|
| Up to 15 m | 6 mm² |
| 15 to 30 m | 10 mm² |
| 30 to 50 m | 16 mm² |
| 50 to 80 m | 25 mm² |
| Over 80 m | 35 mm², own meter or three-phase |
Every job is checked with its own calculation.
Why the minimum is not enough
With 2.5 mm² carrying 32 A for hours, the cable would heat up and the voltage at the charger would drop too far: slow charging, cut-outs and risk. In the most common setup in communal garages, scheme 2 (supplied from your own meter), that 5 % is counted from the meter, including the individual riser cable, so a distant space means a larger cable.
Which cable is used
- RZ1-K (AS) 0.6/1 kV halogen-free cable, required in garages because of how it behaves in a fire, or H07Z1-K in conduit.
- Run in rigid conduit or metal cable tray, with sealing where it crosses fire compartments.
How much it affects the price
Installed cable costs on average about 6 to 6.50 euros per metre (meter) according to 2026 price guides, and rises with the size. That is why the quote grows noticeably beyond about 30 metres, and beyond 50 metres it often pays to look at a separate meter for the space (scheme 3).
When to call an electrician
Always before buying materials: the right size comes from measuring the real distance and checking the riser cable. In Seville, Spain, we calculate it for every EV charger installation in communal garages and every home EV charger installation for houses.
