CCS Combo 1 (CCS1, North American rapid charging connector)

A DC rapid charging connector used in North America that combines the Type 1 plug with two large power pins. The European equivalent is CCS Combo 2, based on Type 2.

What CCS Combo 1 is

CCS Combo 1, or CCS1, is the North American version of the Combined Charging System. A single car inlet joins the top part of a Type 1 connector, for AC charging, with two large pins below for DC rapid (fast) charging.

CCS1 and CCS2

  • CCS Combo 1: based on the Type 1 connector, single-phase on AC. Used mainly in the United States and Canada and some other markets.
  • CCS Combo 2: based on Type 2, it handles single-phase and three-phase AC. It is the European standard, fitted to every new electric car sold in Europe.

The two DC pins are similar, but charger cables are not interchangeable without an adaptor.

Why it may matter to you

In Spain you will come across it if you bring or import an electric car from North America. In that case:

  • European rapid chargers have CCS2 cables, which do not fit a CCS1 inlet directly.
  • Adaptors exist, but not all are reliable or compatible with every power level.
  • For AC charging at home or on the street you will need a Type 2 to Type 1 cable.

Before importing a car, find out whether the manufacturer offers to change the inlet or adapt the vehicle to the European standard.

Which charger to install at home

At home the car charges on AC, so CCS1 makes no difference to the wallbox: what counts is the Type 1 part. A wallbox with a Type 2 socket and a Type 2 to Type 1 cable is usually the most flexible option. See EV charger installation in Seville, Spain.
