FAQ

What electrical installation does a swimming pool need in Spain?

A swimming pool needs its own fuse board for the pump and filter with its protective devices, underwater lighting at 12 V safety extra-low voltage, weatherproof sockets outside the safety zones, equipotential bonding of metal parts and legalisation. The electrical work for a private pool has a guide price of 400 to 1,200 euros.

What electrical installation a swimming pool needs

A pool’s electrics matter more than they seem: they are among the most sensitive in any home, because they combine water, barefoot people and electrical equipment. That is why pools have their own regulation within Spain’s low voltage rules, ITC-BT-31, which defines zones around the pool and what is allowed in each.

The parts of the installation

  • Pump and filter control board, with a timer, a 30 mA RCD and motor protection for the pump.
  • Underwater lighting at 12 V safety extra-low voltage, with its transformer outside the dangerous zones.
  • Supply line buried in ducting to the plant room.
  • Equipotential bonding of ladders, handrails, grilles and other metal parts.
  • Weatherproof sockets, only outside the safety zones.
  • Earthing (grounding) of the whole installation.

The safety zones

  • Zone 0: inside the pool. Only 12 V equipment designed to be submerged.
  • Zone 1: the area around the edge. Very restricted, also at 12 V.
  • Zone 2: a strip further out, with protection requirements.

Outside those zones you can fit sockets and light fittings, with their IP rating and RCD.

Lighting and heating

  • 12 V underwater LED lights, plus garden and perimeter lighting.
  • A heat pump to heat the water: it needs its own line and protection, with an electrical cost of 200 to 600 euros as a guide.

Inspection

Pools with more than 10 kW of installed power are inspected by an authorised inspection body (OCA), initially and then every 5 years, under ITC-BT-05.

About running costs

A pool’s consumption depends mainly on the hours the pump runs, its power and whether you heat the water. A well set timer and an efficient pump make the difference on the summer bill.
